Music Therapy
What is it? Music Therapy is an accredited healthcare profession in the UK that is designed to support the health and well-being of individuals with specific disabilities and mental/physical challenges. As a passionate music therapist, I believe it is an approach that bypasses the use of words and language to target the primitive areas of the brain developed at the start of life between the mother and baby. This can target key areas of development including social communication, emotional regulation, and joint attention for individuals such as those diagnosed with autism. It can also create a path for those with mental health difficulties to understand unconscious feelings and emotions in the body whilst providing paths for creativity and connection and to facilitate emotional release It can also have a positive effect in other areas of life including company-well-being and informal musical groups in day centres, care homes and charity organisations. Willem has been providing music therapy lessons for our 4 year old child regularly during the last year. He has been a constant source of joy and excitement in our daughter’s schedule as she looks forward to their sessions together every week. Willem’s involvement has helped our child improve interaction and communication skills as well as eye contact and turn taking. We can see how she truly enjoys the time she has with Willem, exploring different musical instruments and songs, along with other activities Willem plans each week. Willem goes out of his way to learn about our child’s recent interests and plans each session accordingly. He also spends time after the session with our child, strengthening their bond and learning more on how to help her with her above mentioned skills. We are very happy to work with Willem and would recommend his music therapy sessions to anyone who would benefit from them
